Voice of Milennials @ The World Press Freedom Day 2017 released Voice of Aung Myint Thu "

We are one week away from World Press Freedom Day 2017! Let's hear what these journalists and media researcher have in mind about the theme, Critical Minds for Critical Times: Media's Role in advancing peaceful, just, and inclusive societies!

Voice of Aung Myint Thu- Journalist
" In Myanmar, we are encouraging people not to post hate speech by saying you could get fellowship if you don't post hate speech.

We also write good things about Myanmar on our social media to show our good sides, because people think Myanmar is aggressive due to the hate speech.

In Myanmar we have groups who hack those who post hate speech, and try to counter those posts by saying it's not true. If they talk about hate speech in the conference, it'll be great if they create network to counter hate speech.

Voice of Millennials (VOM) is a group of young journalists coming from different countries from around the world, covering UNESCO’s World Press Freedom Day.
In 2017, they were covering the World Press Freedom Day 2017 with the global theme of Critical Minds for Critical Times: Media’s role in advancing peaceful, just and inclusive societies in Jakarta Convention Centre (JCC), Senayan, Indonesia. The event were kicked off on Monday, May 1st and concluded on May 4th, 2017. They were publishing an E-Magazine with stories and topics surrounding press freedom conditions from around the globe as well as an online media Voiceofmillennials.com.
What used to be known as only World Press Freedom Day’s Youth News Room is named as “Voice of Millennials” for that year celebration. They hoped with that name, they as millennials can give a fresh air of contribution towards the future of journalism, freedom of expression, and press freedom, as well as fighting for us.

This is a difficult time for media around the world, as populist and autocratic leaders demonize media and, in many cases, attempt to silence them through censorship, coercion, arrests and even violence.
The media play an essential role in giving citizens the information they need to make the best possible decisions, revealing corruption and injustice, providing a voice to those who need it most, and bridging the gaps that divide our societies. This role is even more important when media are under attack.
Citizens, media organizations, civil society and governments themselves should do all they can to ensure that the media is free to continue to play its essential role in building peaceful and prosperous societies.

One of the problems within Indonesian press is that they don’t give much attention on pluralism and diverse content.Media should improve representation of a range of groups who may be underrepresented. Nina Mutmainnah Armando is a lecturer from Faculty of Social and Political Sciences University of Indonesia. Many journalists cannot be independent because media owners like to publish favorable coverage to benefit their other businesses or boost their political agenda. Journalists are often in trouble for covering controversial issues. No journalists should ever face abuse. It is essential for freedom of expression that those responsible for the death of journalists be brought to justice.

Basically we don't have any of them right now. Many journalists are pressured, and facing self-censorship. It's a very challenging time for journalists as well. You can't go back to the traditional, old time ways. Many are trying to be independent, relying on crowdfunding. Sometimes you got new channels to get to people, and at the same time it's the challenge for journalists to give the people what they want, what they want to hear.I think another important thing is how do you make it inclusive when you inform the public, many entities. To also accept citizen reporters because journalists have limitations, and it's important to have local voices heard more.
And we try to be global citizen. It's quite overwhelming as well.
A lot of news go digital, what happened to people with no internet or slow internet?
