in Indonesia -2016

Bandung –Development issues that suppress human rights are increasing in
today’s world, particularly in Asia Pacific countries. Myitsone Dam problem in
Myanmar, Land Reclamation issue in Indonesia, mine exploitation in Papua New Guinea,
are few examples of thousands of issues related to business and human rights in
Asia Pacific. Almost all of the development projects that are intended to
increase the economic growth have negative impacts on protecting and respecting
human rights. Five indigenous leaders from Myanmar, including me, attended and discussed about Myanmar.
This fact was revealed at the human rights training for Asia
Pacific countries on 28 May to 4 June 2016 in Bandung. This training was a
partnership between Diplomacy Training
Program (DTP) Australia, and Institute of Policy Research and Advocacy
(ELSAM).
Human Rights training program for civil society organizations in
the whole world is a program that was initiated by DTP since 1990. This year,
the training themed “Indigenous People, Private
Sector, and Country Development”
During training, all the
participants who came from various countries in Asia Pacific were required to
have an understanding of normative concept regarding principal and
international law as well as advocacy strategy in international litigation and
non-litigation. The participants were also invited to analyze National Action
Plan related to Business and Human Rights as well as the role of Human Rights
Commission in each country.
The participants were also asked to understand the principal of Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD)
as well as advocacy strategy at market level and handling complaint mechanisms
in various international organizations related to business, including World
Bank and International Finance
Corporation (IFC)
This training was expected to
be a media for exchanging ideas and experiences related to agrarian affairs,
indigenous people issue, as well as human resources conflict in the whole Asia
Pacific. Besides, this training was also expected to strengthen civil society
organizations network at an international level.
